Garry Kasparov’s campaign tour brought him next to Ghana, a nation whose name means King, or Warrior King. It is an auspicious name for chess, and for a visiting chess king. As always, Kasparov was enthusiastically welcomed by the local chess community as well as local officials from the political and business communities.
Our special thanks and congratulations to George Arko-Dadzie, president of the Ghana Chess Association, for winning his election and showing for the Kasparov team. (And also for the photos and report!)
Kasparov had been keeping up a relentless pace of travel and engagements, but did not seem at all tired. He said, “How I can I be tired with a reception like this? I am so impressed with the level of preparation and their hospitality. In my playing career I got energy from the audience and from fans. Now, as a candidate, it is the same. They have big ideas and want to deliver a better education and better world for their kids. And the kids, wow, they are really determined to change the world!
If we continue to succeed in making that connection, that chess and dynamic new education models are a way to greater success as a student, even as a country, our mission will be a huge triumph. The business community sees it too, by the way, not just teachers and chess people. The CEOs look at this energy, this response, and know they want to have their companies associated with it. As FIDE president, a big part of my team’s job will be facilitating these connections.”
