Garry Kasparov address on education and chess in schools at the NY Forum in Gabon.
“TRANSFORMING A GENERATION”
May 24th, 2014
Village of Kampala. Chess brings hope.
Watching this video, I often wonder what my life would be like if my home city of Baku did not have a chess program. Would I ever live to explore my fullest potential? Would my offering to the world be nearly as influential? Would I ever be happy doing something other than chess?
The children in Kampala village are finally able to learn this timeless game. What is more important, they have hope that tomorrow will be better than yesterday was. As a FIDE president, I pledge to continue to expand chess in schools programs in villages like Kampala. In every village like this one, there is a child willing to learn, willing to overcome, willing to become the champion of the world. All we have to do is offer her a chance.
